"To Tell the Truth"
Exodus 20:16
!. The Origin of Lying
“For you are the children of your father the Devil, and you love to do the evil things he does. He was a murderer from the beginning and has always hated the truth. There is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies.” John 8:44 NLT
II. The Outcome of Lying
(A) Dishonors God
“…let God be found true, though every man be found a liar…” Romans 3:4 NASB
“Jesus said… ‘I am the truth’”… John 14:6 NKJV
“the Spirit of truth…” John 14:17 NKJV
“Your word is truth.” John 17:17 NKJV
(B) Destroys Character
(C) Damns our soul
“The wicked are estranged from the womb; they go astray as soon as they are born, speaking lies.” Psalm 58:3 NKJV
“Don't lie to one another. You're done with that old life. It's like a filthy set of ill-fitting clothes you've stripped off and put in the fire.” Colossians 3:9 MSG

III. The Operation of Lying
(A) Pretense
“The man who says, I know him, but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him.” 1 John 2:4 NIV
“ So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness. We are not living in the truth.” 1 John 1:6 NLT
“If someone says, I love God, and hates his brother, he is a liar…” 1 John 4:20 NKJV
(B) Spreading rumors
“Don't spread harmful rumors…” Exodus 23:1 CEV

IV. The Overcoming of Lying
(A) Love the truth
“Behold, You desire truth in the inner being; my inmost heart.” Psalm 51:6 AMP
(B) Learn the truth
“…know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:32 NIV
(C) Live the truth
“It has given me great joy to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as the Father commanded us.” 2 John 1:4 NIV
“I can't tell you how happy I am to learn that many members of your congregation are diligent in living out the Truth, exactly as commanded by the Father.” 2 John 1:4 MSG
